Scanning Tunneling Microscopes
The development of the family of scanning probe microscopes began with the original invention of the scanning tunneling microscopes way back in 1981. Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer were the ones who developed the first working scanning tunneling microscope while working at IBM Zurich Research Laboratories in Switzerland. The instrument led Binning and Rohrer the Nobel Prize in physics in 1986.
The scanning tunneling microscope is used to studying the surface atoms that are found on the surfaces of different materials. This instrument is based on a complex process of “tunneling” electrons between a surface (of a material) and the tip of the probe. The tip of the probe is sharp and is very small, and it allows for great precision.

But in order to get the best results, the distance between the tip of the probe and the surface of the material being studied should be precisely calculated. As the tip of the probe moves on the surface of the material being studied, a constant flow of electrons must be kept in order to get accurate readings. As soon as the scanning tunneling microscope is done with its job, the researcher is left with a precise “bump map” of the surface material.
The scanning tunneling microscope is classified as a scanning probe microscopy instrument. It is actually a better version of the atomic force microscope. The STM, as the scanning tunneling microscope is sometimes called, provides a higher accuracy and better individual atom separation capabilities, giving the researcher extremely high resolution images of the subject.
Given that the size at which most experiments are done is very small (only about 0.2 nm), the scanning tunneling microscope offers a lot of versatility. Researchers can also manipulate individual atoms on the material surface with the use of the high resolution images that the STM provides. This allows for a very precise chemical and physical reactions to be performed and electron manipulation as well.
So exactly does an STM work? A scanning tunneling microscope works by following the principles of quantum mechanics – the flow of electrons between the surface of the studied material and the tip of the probe is the main feature of the experiment. The quantum mechanical effect is showed by the tunneling of electrons, which is, in simpler terms, the transfer of electrons between the tip of the probe and the surface being studied. The jumping motion of the electrons and the back and forth motion produces a weak electrical current. Precise measurements of the distance between the surface and the probe are done by using converse piezoelectricity.
The STM can be used in many different fields of study. It can be used to better understand the conductivity level mechanisms found in different molecules. It is also handy in conductivity research and in the analysis of the surface structures of various materials as well.
