Open Source Software in Medicine

Radiology has benefited from Open Source since the release of the DICOM Central Test Node software by Mallinkrodt University. Medicine continues to benefit from Open Source today. Dr. Jones will describe the tools used to sequence the SARS virus on a 168 node Linux cluster in 5 days.
The National Institute of Health has developed the Insight Segmentation and Registration toolkit (ITK)  to support multi-dimensional image processing. By standardizing on ITK tools, imaging researchers are able to move beyond writing commonly implemented tools and concentrate on more advanced image operations including CAD.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Learn how Open Source has been used in medicine.

2. Understand the steps to creating successful Open Source projects.

3. Learn about the toolkits currently available for bioinformatics and imaging.
