SCAR 2006 Tours
Facility Tours – Back by Popular Demand!

SCAR 2006 attendees will have the opportunity to participate in tours of Austin facilities, each providing an overview of different system solutions.

Austin Radiological Association (ARA) will sponsor this year’s facility tours.  ARA operates 15 Outpatient Imaging Centers and provides radiology services to 15 area hospitals. ARA performs 1.2 million outpatient and inpatient exams annually. ARA’s Imaging Centers have been on PACS since 2002 enabling subspecialty interpretations over a 6-county area. More than 2,000 referring physicians have Internet access to images and reports. ARA’s fiber optic WAN is second in size in Austin only to Dell; Free Space Optics (FSO) is used at 6 locations. ARA utilizes document imaging for medical and business office functions, speech recognition for outpatient reporting, centralized scheduling, single sign-on software, and IP telephony throughout the enterprise. We provide PACS to the largest hospital network in Austin via an Application Service Provider (ASP) model.

Bus Transportation will be provided from the Trinity Street entrance of the Austin Convention Center.  Please be at the designated departure location 10 minutes before your scheduled tour time.  A tour of any one facility will last 45-60 minutes. Tours require advance registration and many of the tour times have reached their full capacity.  Please check for tour availability at the SCAR Registration Desk, Hilton Austin Hotel, 6th Floor, to make selection on-site.

If you have previously registered for a tour and find that you will be unable to participate, please turn your reservation ticket in to the SCAR Registration Desk so that others may participate.

Tours 2B & 2D

University of Texas Imaging Lab
Computational Visualization Center (CVC)

The Computational Visualization Center (CVC) within the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES) at the University of Texas at Austin is a cross-disciplinary effort whose mission is to develop and improve the core technologies for comprehensive computational modeling, simulation, analysis, and visualization of natural and synthetic phenomena, and then utilize them as an integrated tool for rapid discovery. Its current focus is on computational biological sciences, particularly in the area of Bio-Modeling and Visualization. Bio-Modeling and Visualization have roots in medical illustration and communication for the health sciences, with branches of application to mathematical modeling and computer simulation of artificial life. This subject spans biological phenomena at multiple spatial and time scales enabling the programmatic use of simulation and visualization to quantitatively depict “how things work” at the molecular, cellular, tissue, and organ level scales. Its current director is SCAR Member Professor Chandra Bajaj.

The visualization laboratory facility is managed by TACC and provides an end-to-end infrastructure for data intensive and display intensive computing. The large multi-projected display areas provide unparalleled interactive and immersive visual exploration, supported by parallel data analysis and graphics rendering supercomputers where digital data stream manipulation, storage and switching occur with maximum bandwidth.

Tour includes:

Overview of high performance computational and visualization facilities, and interactive demos of current research in the computational biological sciences.

Tours 3A & 3C  (two locations combined into one tour)
ARA Centralized After Hours Read Site
Seton Medical Center Radiology Department
1st location – ARA Centralized After Hours Read Site

Located adjacent to one of our main hospitals, ARA has a centralized location for handling all after hour’s cases for 15 hospitals. Staffed by from 1-3 radiologists, the site has four PACS workstations; at the center is a full-time clerical assistant (Clerical Physician’s Liaison) in the main communications seat. This liaison assists in managing all incoming requests and many outgoing reports and facilitates communications between hospitals, referring physicians, and radiologists. This site was designed to be a highly efficient and comfortable work environment. Primary interpretations are dictated into the transcription systems of all 15 area hospitals.  Hospital cases are handled from 5:00 pm – 8:00 am during weekdays and during all hours on weekends with an average report turnaround time of 18 minutes.
